Meet The Staff

Few figures in Australian piping have enjoyed a career as diverse, influential, and enduring as Barry Gray.

With more than 50 years of involvement in the pipe band movement, Barry has established a reputation as a performer, competitor, Pipe Major, educator, adjudicator, administrator, and mentor. His contribution to piping has influenced hundreds of musicians throughout Australia and beyond.

Barry's competitive career has seen him perform at the highest levels of solo and pipe band competition. A multiple NSW Open Solo Piping Champion, he has competed in Grade 1 competition in Australia, New Zealand, and Scotland, including appearances at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow with the City of Blacktown Pipe Band, the New Zealand Police Pipe Band, and Scotland's Fife Constabulary Pipe Band.

From 1982 until 2008, Barry served as Pipe Major of the City of Blacktown Pipe Band. During his leadership, the organisation developed into one of Australia's most successful pipe band programmes, fielding Grade 1, Grade 3, Grade 4, and Juvenile bands and providing opportunities for hundreds of players to develop their musical skills and competitive careers.

As a tutor and Pipe Major, Barry has guided bands and students to success at the highest levels. In 1992, the City of Blacktown Pipe Band's Grade 4A band achieved 2nd place at the World Pipe Band Championships. In 2010, the Hawkesbury Nepean Valley Pipe Band Juvenile Band, under Barry's tuition, placed 6th at the European Pipe Band Championships and 10th at the World Championships. In 2014, the Hawkesbury Nepean Valley Pipe Band secured both the Australian and South Pacific Grade 4A Championship titles.

Beyond competition, Barry has enjoyed a remarkable professional performance career. Over more than three decades, he has appeared alongside some of the world's most recognisable entertainers, including Sir Paul McCartney, Bryan Adams, Robbie Williams, John Farnham, Jimmy Barnes, Delta Goodrem, Tom Jones, and The Battlefield Band. His performances have ranged from major concert tours and television appearances to stadium events and international productions. Barry also performed with his students from the Oxley College Pipe Band alongside Robbie Williams during the 2022 AFL Grand Final entertainment.

As an educator, Barry's greatest passion remains helping others achieve their potential. He is the founder of the Sydney School of Piping & Drumming and the creator of The Millennium Method, an online learning system designed to make piping education accessible to students anywhere in the world. Through his teaching, workshops, online resources, and mentorship, he has assisted hundreds of students ranging from complete beginners through to Australian Champions, Grade 1 performers, and international competitors.

Today, Barry continues to teach, perform, adjudicate, and lead within the Australian piping community. His philosophy remains unchanged: inspire people, provide quality instruction, create opportunities, and help every student become the very best musician they can be.

Whether on the competition field, concert stage, classroom, or practice room, Barry Gray's lifelong commitment to piping continues to leave a lasting mark on the next generation of pipers and drummers.
